Career success means different things to different people.

From my work with mid-career professionals, I see mainly 3 ways in which people define career success.

CAREER GROWTH. Some people define career success in terms of landing a specific role, getting promoted, securing a good salary or raise or bonus. They choose one or more of these as criteria for assessing career success.

FULFILMENT. Other people define success in terms of job satisfaction, engagement or fulfilment. Job satisfaction refers to whether their basic needs - salary, benefits, working conditions, and other expectations are met. Engagement refers to whether they feel safe, wanted and valued. Fulfilment usually comes from a sense of accomplishing personally meaningful goals and creating a significant impact in the lives of others.

IMPACT. Others look at career success in terms of the impact they are able to create - on other people. Depending on the nature of work and type of organisation, they might look at the impact they have on people within the organisation, the organisation's customers, or the world at large.

When it comes to your career, there is no right or wrong definition of success.

Define career success the way it makes sense to you, and pursue career success on your own terms.
