Before you agree to become a mentor, make sure you meet all these requirements to become more effective for your mentees.

To become a mentor is truly an honour, but it is also a great deal of responsibility. Essentially, it involves another person trusting you wholeheartedly to look out for them and help them reach new heights. Therefore, a mentor needs to be effective in order to help his/her mentees attain their goals.

The following qualities will help distinguish an effective mentor from an mediocre one:

1) Knows his/ her mentee well

An effective mentor will make the effort to get to know his/her mentee on a personal level as well as a professional one. This is important to understand what has shaped the mentee so far.

2) Treats every mentoring opportunity as important and unique

A mentor may take on different mentees at the same time but an effective mentor treats each individual as unique and important, without favouring one over the other.

3) Acts Kindly & Patiently with Mentees

Effective mentors know they have the power to shape the future of mentees and therefore take measures to act patiently and kindly, and serve as great role models.

4) Doesn't shy away from difficult conversations

One of the hardest thing a mentor has to do is to provide honest feedback. In some cases, this feedback may be critical or hard-to-digest. However, an effective mentor knows that he/she has to bite the bullet and speak with his/her mentee, no matter how difficult.
