Leaders are less strategic than they think

Most leaders tend to overestimate their strategic orientation - until they undergo an assessment or receive reliable feedback from stakeholders.

In most cases, the perceived lack of strategic orientation is not on account of lack of skills, or even intent.

When we dig deeper, the most common blockers to thinking and acting strategically appear to be:

? Lack of Time
? Lack of Clarity on Priorities
? Lack of Alignment

For most leaders, developing their strategic orientation is less about learning new skills, and more about addressing these blockers. Some steps that you can take to think and act more strategically include:

Free up time for thinking by reviewing your routines

✅ Work with key stakeholders to rationalise the number of key priorities to a manageable number

✅ Communicate, clarify, and assign accountability to team members

✅ Use the time freed up to think about the future

✅ Regularly seek feedback from key stakeholders on how you’re doing.

By following some simple steps, and by taking your team and key stakeholders into confidence, you can develop your strategic orientation, and also change any negative perceptions of important stakeholders.
