Effective communicators take responsibility for their message being understood.
They help their audience understand their message better by communicating the idea in more than one way.
A great framework that helps you enrich how you communicate your ideas is one developed by Matt Church, a charismatic speaker, best-selling author, mentor, and one of the most impactful communicators I've ever met.
Any idea can be communicated at 3 levels:
Concept: You can simply share the idea as simply and elegantly as you can and hope people get the meaning you intended.
Content: You can help people understand your idea better by making it more concrete - by providing examples, data, case-studies, steps etc.
Context: You can also make it easier to understand an idea by making it more abstract! You do this by linking it to a bigger picture that is already in the audience's mind. Examples of communicating at the context level include using metaphors, models, big principles etc.
Effective communicators don't stop at communicating their idea directly (Concept). They know when and how to zoom in and share details (Content), and when to zoom out and help the audience see the big-picture (Context).
In doing this, they help more people understand their ideas more deeply.
