Leaders are plenty but thought leaders a few. Here's how you too can establish yourself as a thought leader within your network and industry.

Of all the different types of leaders out there, I believe that thought leaders are the most powerful and admired people. These individuals are the go-to experts in the field / industry that others look up to for ideas and opinions. Thought leaders have established their credibility by inspiring others with their innovation and ability to execute plans successfully.

We have many leaders but these leaders only have the ability to impact their teams and organizations. Thought leaders have the power to move an entire industry to greater heights. Therefore many leaders aspire to become thought leaders in their own field.

This transformation may seem complex and difficult but it isn't so. With these nine simple steps, every leader can transform himself/herself into a thought leader who is a force to be reckoned with.

1) Select your niche

Choose a topic that you are passionate and well-informed about. Don't fall into the trap of selecting a topic just because it's trending at the moment. If you stick to something that you truly love, you will be more authentic and establish a long legacy of thought leadership.

2) Keep learning

Don't be content with your current level of expertise. Respected thought leaders keep adding to their knowledge by learning new things. Ensure that you read the literature and commentaries written by other thought leaders and subject matter experts. It also helps if you undergo certifications and training in your field. MOOCs offered by platforms such as Coursera and Udemy are also a great way to get formal learning.

3) Walk the Talk

You may wish to be a thought leader but it can't be all 'thoughts'. In other words, you need to have a track record of excellence in your field. You have to show that you have the ability to create an impact. This can only be done if you are willing to get your hands dirty and gain experience.

4) Share Your Knowledge

Don't keep your wisdom to yourself. Share it with the crowd. Writing regularly will help you express your thoughts and refine your ideas more effectively. With time, you will find that you have developed your own unique style which is essential for any thought leader.  In the 21st century, this aspect of thought leadership has been made easy. Blogs and social media are a great way to share your disruptive ideas and game-changing opinions while reaching a large, global audience.

5) Be Open to Feedback

Approach your mentor or other thought leaders in the field for feedback. Another great source of feedback is from your audience. If you're writing on a blog or your social media account, check for constructive comments from your audience. Their feedback will help you get better at your craft while providing them with the content that they wish to read.

6) Consider becoming a guest writer / host

Once you've started writing regularly and gained some traction on your blogs, you should start pitching your work. Try approaching other blogs, and even the media (such as an industry magazine, newspaper, radio, TV channels, podcasts, etc.) to collaborate. By featuring your work and having your name appear on established platforms, you can build your brand more effectively.

7) Build your network

You can't hope to be a thought 'leader' if you don't have any followers. Therefore it's very important for every aspiring thought leader to go out and spread the word. Industry gatherings and interest groups are a great place to find people with common interests, exchange ideas and learn new things.

8) Write a book

Every thought leader I know worth his / her salt has written or is in the process of writing a book. I don't know why but I've seen that people are more drawn to thought leaders who have their name on the cover of the book. Authoring a book has opened new doors for many a thought leader & has helped them gain access to bigger platforms and a larger audience.

9) Extrospect

Leaders introspect but thought leaders have to 'extrospect'. What I mean by this is that you have to look at things on the outside. Dedicate at least one hour a week to 'extrospect' and reflect on the world around you. I wouldn't be surprised if you get some of your best ideas during this time.

Becoming a thought leader will no longer remain a part of your wishful thinking if you follow these nine steps. It may seem daunting but it certainly isn't impossible. Stop merely 'thinking' and start taking these steps. Soon, you'll become a thought leader in your own right.

Questions for Reflection
