The ability to command respect and exude power doesn't happen through words but rather, through body language. Here are some ways to improve your body language as a leader.

For a leader to be truly effective, they have to be able to garner respect from others and command the room that they are in. However, words can only take one so far. Effective leaders are those who are able to successfully use their body language to exude their leadership.

Why is Body Language Important?

Imagine how Martin Luther King's famous "I have a dream" speech would have been received if he had cowered behind the podium and looked at his notes all the time while speaking. Do you think he would have moved as many people and led the Civil Rights Movement?

The answer is no. Whenever one communicates, 70% of it is through non-verbal communication of which body language is an important component. A confident body language will not only help a leader get the attention of others but transform his/her mood, and raise self-esteem.

Here are some common ways to improve your leadership body language:

Powerful Stature

Maintaining a powerful stature involves standing in a position with your feet planted firmly, shoulders back and chest out. This pose conveys confidence and executive presence which are attractive in a leader.

Eye Contact

Effective leaders are able to establish eye contact with those that they are speaking to. If you are addressing a crowd, ensure you look at all sections of audience. Not maintaining eye contact can make you seem distrustful or nervous.

Pleasant Demeanor

Leaders should look approachable and friendly. This can be done by softening the eyes and practicing smiling more. Smiling at others and greeting them will establish rapport and reduce the risk of you coming off as snobby.

Confident Handshake

Working on a strong handshake will improve your leadership body language considerably. The idea is to keep it firm and not too brief. This will generate a better impression on others.

Improving your leadership body language can do wonders to how others perceive you as a leader. A confident and positive body language will help others view you as an established leader who can take his/her people through any difficulties.
