Your Customer is a critical element of your personal brand.

The Customer is who you serve.

If you're an employee, you have two customers - the end customer, and the organisation. You help the organisation serve its customer.

When it comes to your career, the organisation is more relevant.

This is not to downplay the importance of the end customer. You won't go far unless you serve them well.

More importantly, you won't go anywhere if you don't serve your organisation.

Unless you're the CEO or thereabouts, the notion of the organisation as your customer is a useful fiction. Your true customer is the person/people whose decisions impact your career.

For some, this could be their supervisor. For most, it's a group - their manager's peers or 1/2 levels up.

If you're looking for a career/job change - it's the person who decides whether to make you the offer.

Getting clear on your customer is critical for personal branding - unless you know your customer you can't shape their perception.

At the same time - your customer impacts your brand. Your perceived value is higher if you work for the "right" companies.

In some cases, the managers you worked for enhance your brand value.

Choose your customers wisely - they shape your personal brand
